Con un ajustado triunfo 87 por 84 ante Islas Vírgenes, La Selección Nacional de Baloncesto logró su primer triunfo en los Juegos Panamericanos Lima 2019 y ahora se medirá ante Uruguay por el quinto puesto.
Venezuela, que puedo cerrar el tercer y cuarto periodo de buena manera, luego de tener altibajos en los dos primeros segmentos del juego, hilvanó una victoria guiada por Jhornan Zamora quien concretó 19 puntos.
En la acción de juego, “Los Guerreros” saltaron al parquet del Eduardo Dibós con Gregory Vargas, Jhornan Zamora, José “Grillo” Vargas (C), Néstor Colmenares y Miguel Ruíz. Mientras que el coach oriundo de Puerto Rico, William Colón, colocó a Georgio Milligan, Walter Hodge (C), Peltier Devon, Laron Smith y Shakeem Alcindor.
José “Grillo” Vargas abrió el score del juego con una canasta doble y el equipo dirigido por Duró, tendría una fuerte lucha en los primeros diez minutos del juego con buenos ataques ofensivos e igual forma en defensa para terminar dicho lapso igualados 19-19.
Venezuela que adoleció de muchas impresiones en sus dos primeros cotejos ante Puerto Rico y Estados Unidos, perdería 5 balones vitales en el segundo cuarto para que Islas Vírgenes se impusieran 29-20 y mantener la pizarra a favor 39-48.
Los guerreros reaccionaron
Con el comienzo del tercer cuarto, “Los Guerreros” se amoldarían con buen dominio del balón y Jhornan Zamora, se pondría al equipo encima con tres cestas triples (5/10 C3 en total) para recuperar los nueve puntos que lo mantenían abajo y se lo llevarían 15-24 para nivelar a 63 el marcador ante el representativo caribeño.
Por su parte, el combinado nacional, sacaría provecho en el cuarto periodo al poder manejar los tiempos del juego y aguantar la arremetida rival. Con lo justo Venezuela ganaría ese lapso 21-24 para llevarse la victoria 87 por 84.
Los más destacados por Venezuela (87); Jhornan Zamora 19 puntos (6/13 TC, 5/10 C3), Gregory Vargas 14 unidades (4/9 TC, 3/8 C3), Michael Carrera 12 puntos y 11 rebotes, Néstor Colmenares cerró con 10 y 5 rebotes.
Mientras que por los derrotados, Islas Vírgenes (84), destacaron; Georgio Milligan con 22 puntos y 7 rebotes, 18 unidades para Walter Hodge y Laron Smith ayudó con 15 más.

Luego de la derrota ante los Estados Unidos, el criollo Dwight Lewis-Padrón tiene una pequeña lesión en el tobillo derecho y se mantiene día a día, según versiones de la Federación Venezolana de Baloncesto.
